Beginner's Guide to Sound Design: Where to Start

You may be a song-writer with just a guitar, a journal of lyrics and a strong desire to put your ideas into fruition. Maybe you’re someone pursuing their music career, and want to take control of their own recordings and productions?

In today’s digital age, the landscape of music creation and audio engineering has transformed dramatically. Inspired artists around the world, are turning spaces in their homes or apartments to vibrant studios, empowering themselves to learn, experiment, and create from the comfort of their own space.

The question is, where do we start?

Without hands-on professional studio experience, the benefit of a costly audio-engineering course or hours potentially wasted looking for resources online, it’s all too easy to spend a lot on gear you may not even need.

Starting something new can be stressful, time consuming and at times, discouraging. Starting off with the right tools and just enough knowledge to get you creating is what you need to keep you on track and focused so you can prioritize your creations.

Before we can move on, we need to ask ourselves;

What is your goal?

Unless we are working with a generous budget, it’s always important to realize what goals you seek to achieve with your sound. Someone who just wants to record a rough demo to bring to their producer or engineer probably isn’t going to need a $1,800 audio interface. Whereas someone who’s relatively experienced, or even just starting off that’s looking to eventually build their own recording business may see it as an absolute game changer.

Looking for a straightforward setup to comfortably learn the basics? Or were you looking to step out of your shell and start performing live? Maybe you wanted to pursue something different, like the art of Foley?

With the right gear and expert guidance, we’ll help you start off strong so you can focus on what truly matters—your sound!
